Court adjourns Nnamdi Kanu’s trial till Dec. 5

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday adjourned the trial of the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, until December 5.
Kanu is being prosecuted alongside others on charges of treasonable felony.
The case was adjourned due to the absence of ‎the trial judge, Justice Binta Nyako, who said to be attending the ‘All Judges’ Conference’ being held at the National Judicial Institute, Abuja.
Kanu was on Monday absent from court for the second time after the alleged invasion of his home in Abia State by the military on September 14, ‎since when he had been declared missing by his family.
His co-defendants and a serving senator, Eyinnaya Abaribe, who is one of the three persons standing as sureties for the bail granted the IPOB leader, was however in court on Monday.
Kanu’s lawyer, Mr Ifeanyi Ejiofor, told the judge on October 17 that Kanu had been missing after soldiers allegedly invaded the IPOB leader’s home‎ on September 14, 2017, adding that the Nigerian Army was in the best position to produce the defendant.

Nigeria: INEC Declares Willie Obiano Winner of Anambra Poll

Incumbent governor of Anambra State and All Progressives Grand Alliance's candidate Willie Obiano has shrugged off a fickle showing by All Progressives Congress's Tony Nwoye and People's Democratic Party's Oseloka Obaze to win the November 18 governorship election in the State.
In the results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Saturday, Obiano won in all 21 local government areas with a total of 234, 071 votes.
The All Progressives Congress's candidate Tony Nwoye came a distant second after garnering 98, 752. The candidate of the People's Democratic Party Oseloka Obaze polled 70, 293.
The candidate of the United Progressive Party (UPP) Osita Chidoka, who came fourth in the election with a paltry 7, 903 votes, said he lost to the superior financial strength of the major parties.
"We lost to superior financial firepower. As Democrats, we concede to the voters' choices," he said in a statement on Saturday.
"The true hallmark of democracy is the respect for the voice of the ballot as that of the majority.
"But the inner truth is that we won! We won at the most important place; in the hearts of people; our people who saw us toil and push in the arena against all odds; who saw the sincerity of our mission and gave all in support of our quest for collective good. We salute you for your support and personal sacrifices to the campaign."

Lagos to get 24/7 power supply in 2018 – Ambode

The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, has said plans are at advanced stages to generate constant electricity for residents of the state in 2018.
He noted that the state government had already devised strategies to short-circuit power generation, transmission and distribution to ensure there was “24/7 power supply to residents.”
Ambode spoke at a recent interactive session with members of the business community and informal sector, a statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Habib Haruna, said on Sunday.
“Presently, we have less than 1,000MW in Lagos and the fundamental issues remain with generation, transmission and distribution. Transmission is still owned primarily by the Federal Government. But in Lagos State, we have become creative and we have done Independent Power Project through which we were able to generate 47.5MW which was distributed short-circuiting transmission.
“So, if it works, does it look like a template we can now use to get power freedom or what we call power security? If we say we are the fifth largest economy in Africa and we are not in control of how power is generated in an economy that wants to move from fifth to third, then something is wrong.
“So, what we are saying is, let’s find a way to short-circuit them within the ambit of the law,” the governor was quoted as saying.
Ambode noted that the state government was also talking with electricity distribution companies operating in the state to supply 24/7 power to residents at a higher tariff, subject to agreement of all stakeholders, while government would be the guarantor of the people.

No resignation as Robert Mugabe addresses nation

Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe has resisted mounting pressure to step down, telling the nation that he will preside over a ruling party congress next month.
The 93-year-old Zimbabwean leader had been widely expected to announce his resignation as Zimbabwe's head of state and government on Sunday, five days after a surprise military takeover in which he was placed under house arrest.
But in his much-anticipated TV address from his State House office, Mugabe acknowledged criticism but said the country needs to "return to normalcy" without making any statement on his position.
"Whatever the pros and cons of how they [the army] went about their operation, I, as commander-in-chief, do acknowledge their concerns," said Mugabe, seated alongside army commanders.
"We must learn to forgive and resolve contradictions real or perceived in a comradely Zimbabwean spirit," he added.
It was a dramatic turn of events in a week that has seen the army taking control and the streets of Harare filled with tens of thousands of people expressing support for the military's action and calling for the president to step down.
Earlier on Sunday, there were jubilant scenes at the ZANU-PF headquarters in Harare as the ruling party announced the expulsion of Mugabe as its leader and gave him a Monday noon ultimatum to step down as president, or face impeachment.
ZANU-PF officials said Mugabe, who has been leading Zimbabwe for 37 years, would face impeachment proceedings in parliament on Tuesday if the deadline passed.
Party members also expelled his wife, Grace, from its ranks and voted to name the sacked Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa, whom Mugabe fired on November 6, as new party leader.
Despite having been dismissed as ZANU-PF's leader, Mugabe vowed to preside over a key party conference in December.
"The party congress is due in a few weeks and I will preside over its processes," he said in his national address..
